I understand. I'm in a slump right now because I know that all my July races are a "no-go" and although I LOVE running simply for running, I feel like I need that something extra. Maybe I need to start a Roland running group :)

We keep getting told in life to set goals for ourselves. Finally, it sinks in and for one project or another we set a goal. We've committed ourselves to something; we've invested ourselves in it; we've (in some cases) put some amount of our reputation on the line. Even when we can't fulfill that goal for a reason outside ourselves we can be upset. Maybe we resent (on some small level) being unable to see our plan through; maybe, now that we finally talked ourself into this commitment, we want to see if we could really do it. If nothing else, it's a death of sorts and any death leads to some sort of grief. Whether it's resentment, unresolved curiosity, grief or something else, at least you've got a plan to make up for what you don't have for now.

Since I turned 30, I have: permanently left the only line of work I ever really wanted to do, worked for two other employers since then, gone from being a father of one to a father of two, lived at seven different addresses (including living with my brother for a few weeks & my in-laws for three months), gotten a cracked rib, a hernia and a couple other things that put me in the hospital for 17 days.

The unexpected has just begun for you. There's nothing wrong with making plans but be as prepared as possible for anything.

Incline to the finish, huh? BOO!

Sounds like your positives and negatives were about the same as mine when I ran this one last year. Different sponsors this year but it sounds like they still have a few kinks to work out.

Nice run, Katy!

I've only eaten banana bread (regularly) the last couple of decades that was made using the recipe from my wife's family. The key ingredient is ... chocolate chips. Raw banana gags me so I haven't tried eating it since 1974 (seriously!) so that's how I get my bananas - with chocolate.

Katy, what a wonderfully uplifting post :) We talked in church today about faith during trials and how it's so easy sometimes to dwell on the negative. But when you can open your heart to the positive that is all around you, and how those trials are making you stronger, you can find joy in the midst of it all. I'm happy for you :)

It's always disappointing when races don't work out the way you plan. This does sound like a fun run, but they need to get their sprinkles together!

And NO BEER at the finish? It's very odd when I hear about post-race celebrations around the country. The major reason anyone runs here in New Orleans is for the unlimited local beer (Abita Amber), and jambalaya.

When the Rock & Roll group took over the marathon here, there was almost a coup when we all discovered that we only received one (ONE!), light beer and a small salad at the end. Plus an orange and a banana. $120 and that's all we get?

But, I digress....

You should send some constructive feedback to the organizers. Maybe they'll do it better next time.

Congrats on racing though! One down for the year!

I think there's a balance, of course; worrying too much about things, especially those you can't control, is bad. Not thinking or worrying about anything at all is also bad. On one hand, you're wasting resources, time, headache, blood pressure, and so forth hitting your head against a wall. On the other, you're too carefree to watch out for things coming up that may otherwise blindside you, etc.

I'm all about the balance. The problem, of course, is finding the balance, and THAT is not always easy. But I wish you luck in it -- you DO worry too much! :)

How good and right. And we all need to remember this. But you're right....it's hard.... and I'm impatient ... and Oh so tired! So I will take this reminder to march around my city today and then rest. And then I'll march again tomorrow. And rest. Until God's time.

Thanks girl! Love you!
